I recently acquired new craft supplies in the form of yarn and fabric. I found some beautiful fabric, including laminated fabric (similar to oil cloth but thinner), from The Stitch Lab on So. Congress. I made darling daughter a re-usable lunchbag, lined with the laminated fabric and closable with a velcro tab. If you look closely, the fabric got caught in my feed dogs on the lower right. It's a reusable lunchbag, I am not worried enough about it to rip it out and risk tearing this fabric. Apparently there are tricks to sewing with laminated fabric and oil cloth that I am unaware of. There is a book out there that has some reportedly great techniques for sewing with this type of fabric. The author's bio is quite interesting:

Kelly McCants, believes that there is still a bit of a 1950's housewife in all of us, even if we have left the days of June Cleaver behind--we all want a comfy place to call home. After all, our homes are where we make our memories, and it's where life's celebrations begin. Her Modern June goodies, Oilcloth Addict tutorials, and her new book "Sewing with Oilcloth," are all meant to help you create a bright and happy home that's easy to care for. Oilcloth, laminated cotton and chalk cloth items are her specialty, but helping you to make special memories is her goal.

There will be two model homes at 1105 and 1103 Walsh Trail in Cedar Park, Texas filled to the rafters with great gifts to help temper this summer heat.

Staying Creative

When you're an artist/creator/crafter/maker it's all about being creative. It's about expression and stepping outside the boundary box that you OR society has placed on your head. It's about sticking with it, pushing yourself, having fun and trying to stay inspired.

Sometimes that last bit about staying inspired gets left behind in the creative rubble. When you have daily jobs, families, pets, aspirations, school, volunteering and the rest of life to deal with, working to stay creative isn't at the top of the priority list. Sometimes it takes a little nudge to remind us what is important.

On Friday Austin Craft Riot joined Etsy in hosting a world wide craft party. We want to thank everyone who came out this year. It is always such a treat to see folks get their hands dirty and find some beauty come out of their hard work. Between the button making, screen printing, duct tape jewelry, and upcylcled bags those in attendance were decked out to hit the town in their handmade fun. You can check out pictures from the photo booth, as well as all the other good times had at Starving Art Studios.

We would be remiss to not give a special thanks to The Lonely Gourmet who very graciously supported us in bringing snacks to the crafty masses, as working this hard can really bring on an appetite. At the Lonely Gourmet "Where Single Doesn't Mean Boring" you can get crafty with your dinner.

Last year was a smashing success, and we're planning an even better, BIGGER party this year. The 2nd Annual Renegade Craft Fair in Austin will be May 21st- 22nd from 11:00 am – 7:00 pm at the Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Rd. Austin, TX 78704. The 54th Zilker Garden Festival

The 54th Annual Zilker Garden Festival is this week end and the forecast shows loads of sunshine. This show is a favorite of any plant lover and you will have the opportunity to see plants you may have not even heard of. The lush gardens are filled with music, art, and plants to take home with you. There is always so much for the little ones in the Kids Corner, and opportunities to hear talks from master gardeners. If all of that was not enough you will even get to see some of the Esty Austin team out as well. Check out the site for a discount on advanced tickets, but you can still get them at the door.

Brandy of Pigsey Art creates fun upcyled journals, stickers, magnets, and pendants. They are all thoughtfully made with skill and little humor.

Etsy Austin At SXSW

The team had an amazing time at the SXSW event. We would like to thank Etsy for having us and everyone who came out to join in the festivities. Fun was had by all while checking out our Wall of Wow featuring work by some of our team members, and making crafts to take home. We even got a mention on the CCN blog.

Members of the team provided samples of their work to display for patrons of the event to view. We had QR codes for each shop that were very popular with the tech savvy crowd. It was great to get to brag on each other and tell how supportive and active the team is in Austin.

The crafting tables were filled with people getting involved in the hand made vibe. Etsy and Burda Style provided the tools and supplies to make upcylced t-shirt bags and hand decorated shot glasses. It was a great weekend and we look forward to more events like this in the future.

Saddle Up Babsy!

SXSW has begun and Etsy has arrived to keep it crafty. You will have the opportunity to meet Etsy Admins from Brooklyn, and create some crafts to take home. At Venue 222 , 222 E. 6th Street Austin TX 78701, March 12th - 13th from noon to midnight there are no badges required. Etsy Austin will also be at the show with Babsy the cat from noon to 7pm. You can saddle up and take your picture with her. The team will have a Wall Of Wow displaying a sampling of wares all hand made locally and team members available to answer any of your questions. After 8 pm Venue 222 will bring out the rock and roll. Saturday you wil be entertained by Neighbors and The Black Angels. Sunday at 5 pm there will be a DIY Panel with KnittaPlease, Burdastyle, Threadless, and Spoonflower. The BurdaStyle DIY Fashion Show will hit the stage at 9 pm and then Quintron and Ms. Pussycat will be on deck with DJ Rana June providing the music.

Hammer It Out's Guide to Late Night Austin

It is late you have had an amazing day of music and fun, but your partner in crime is hungry and getting grumpy. We have all been there. Lucky for you this is happening in Austin and you have options beyond the truck stops on the highway. This is not a complete list of late night places, but I have been to all of these and would recommend them to my friends.

If you are already downtown there will be an array of pizza shops and carts to choose from. They are all good people, but one joint stands out for me Casino El Camino. The Food Network has come calling to check out the larger than life burgers. They are fresh, made to order, and open until last call. The Buffalo Burger is excellent. Also open until 2 am is Trudy's. They now have three locations that are all amazing. You do not get the kind of service they offer here just anywhere. On top of that they server a famous Mexican Martini to cool down the spice of your meal.

Now onto the places that are there for you 24 hours a day. If you have a hankering for authentic Mexican pastries or some fresh tortillas then La Mexicana Bakery will get you fixed up. They also have a breakfast and lunch menu that they serve all day. Katz's Deli on 6th street has been bringing a touch of New York by way of their deli to Austin since 1979. If you want a reuben or blintz this is your spot. Another great 6th street spot is the 24 Dinner. I will just say gourmet chicken and waffles and leave it at that. Kerby Lane Cafe is an institution here. It is not at all unusual for people to wait for hours to get a a short stack on a Saturday morning. They also have a seasonal menu with things like gruyere and kielbasa quiche. Another super breakfast spot is Magonila Cafe. You can also get sandwiches, tacos, and some Tex-Mex too.

Star Seeds Cafe is a small no nonsense diner with good music on the speakers, and great food on the table. If your main need is coffee check out Bennu or Strange Brew. Both shops have a great cup of Joe and you can also grab a pastry or a sandwich. I would also like to mention Mrs. Johnson's Bakery. They serve hot doughnuts starting at 8:40 PM until midnight. The glazed are a mouthful of nostalgia for a time when a guy bought a shop and perfected his craft.

I don't care what anybody tells you these are the best in town. Welcome to Austin we are happy to have you. While you are here support good local restaurants, and drive safe.

Action Jackson's Guide to Midtown

Whenever I have friends or family visiting from out of town, I usually ask around for suggestions of places to visit or activities that are characteristically Austin. The responses I receive are usually overwhelmingly food-related. And though there are plenty of sites to see and things to do in the lone star state capital besides eat, it's not a bad starting point.

There are a few ways to make the most important meal of the day (aka breakfast for all you night owls) a memorable one. If you like to start your day on a sweet note, I'd suggest cinnamon rolls and coffee at Upper Crust Bakery. Though they have an array of freshly-baked breads and pastries to appease any breakfast bread craving, the cinnamon rolls hit the spot every time for me. For a quick and filling Tex-Mex-inspired meal that could easily fit the breakfast/brunch/lunch bill, pick up a few tacos at Torchy's Tacos. My favorite is the Dirty Sanchez. And no, I'm not being vulgar; it's really on the menu. If you find yourself hitting the snooze button too many times to make it to breakfast, enjoy a mix of salads, sandwiches, and comfort food at Blue Star Cafeteria. I usually split some fried artichoke hearts with a friend and order a strawberry salad for myself.

To polish off any good meal, Austin provides a wide variety of ways to help you get your sweet tooth fix. Two of my favorites are local mainstay chains that have managed to preserve a unique Austin vibe through their years of growth. The first of these is Hey Cupcake! Though the cupcakery (cupcake + bakery) has one permanent hq, most of the locations are housed out of silver airstream trailers. You can't go wrong with any of the cakes topped with cream cheese icing, but the Sweetberry is the best of the best. Hands down, the most well known Austin-y sweet shop is Amy's Ice Cream. The shop's paint job and employees are as weird as the ice cream is delicious. Though the flavors and crush'ns (toppings) combinations are on rotation, I'd recommend trying the most outrageous mix available. My most memorable Amy's cup was called "Kindergarten Cop" and consisted of Mexican Vanilla ice cream, bits of Heath Bar, and *brace yourself* doughnut pieces. Seriously, I can't make this stuff up.

Whether you're taking a breather from the SXSW festivities or getting a case of the shopping bug, you'll eventually make the rounds of Austin shops. If the idea of adorning yourself in pistols and skulls appeals to you, be sure to stop by Atomic Cherry Boutique. This upscale punk rock/rockabilly boutique neighbors one of Austin's favorite tattoo parlors, Atomic Tattoo, and sells adorably dangerous pieces to fit any budget. To feed your brain and inner nerd (or outer for some), Austin Books & Comics is the place to go. Supposedly, the space it's housed in was a part of a former roller rink. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that the store boasts the largest and best comic book collection in town.

Should you find yourself overdressed for the big week or the unlucky person whose baggage was lost in transit, a shopping trip to Blue Elephant will have you dressed head to toe in a style reflective of and appropriate for the festival. The spacious boutique sells women's clothing, shoes, accessories, makeup, and gifts, widely ranging in price and style. Added bonus- the shop always has a plate of homemade chocolate chip cookies out for customers to enjoy while they shop! Though it goes without saying, South by (that's what us locals call it) attracts an immense amount of creative talent. Being in the midst of it can definitely inspire you to tap into your own creativity. The Art Pad, a mosaic project studio, is a short walk from the Upper Crust Bakery. The shop provides the tools, tiles, and the mosaic "canvas" of your choice. Because the studio encourages customers to bring in personal pottery and jewelry to incorporate into pieces, a finished mosaic creation would make the perfect handmade SXSW memento.

Hammer It Out's Guide to Hyde Park

There is really not any question as to why Hyde Park is such a popular place to live. It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in town and was started as a suburb of Austin over a century ago. As Austin has grown it has become closer to downtown, and is packed full of history and entertainment. With large live oak tress providing shade and ambiance this is the type of neighborhood you will not want to leave.

The accomplished sculptor Elizabeth Ney made her home there here in 1892 building her studio Formosa, which has become a museum open to the public. The museum is located next to the park that includes a tennis court, basketball court, and playscape for the kids.

A very short walk from the park will get you to a cluster of restaurants where you can find something to please everyone. You can get a great bowl of pasta at Asti Trattoria or Vino Vino. If you are looking for vegetarian or vegan options visit Mother's Cafe. I personally love their beans and rice. If you want some good old fashioned awesome pizza, stop in at The Parlour. There is a good chance you will hear some good tunes too. The Hyde Park Bar and Grill has often kept my household sustained with down home cooking done well. Be sure to check out the fries--they often win awards.

On a lazy afternoon when I just want a sandwich on a picnic bench under a shade tree, there is no better place that than Avenue B Grocery. It is a staple for anyone who lives near it, and just as cute as all get out.

When you find yourself in need of great place for a cup of joe, you are in luck as there are some really great options. The Flight Path has a covered outdoor patio and quiet indoor space great for reading. Dolce Vita Espresso Bar also boasts a gelato bar, while Quacks Bakery has all manner of cookies, cakes, pastries, and pies. Their tiramisu is worth traveling for. I would be remiss to not mention Fresh Plus the local grocery store, and the convenience store The Pronto Mart. They both are fixtures in Hyde Park and important to the residents of the neighborhood.

At the Hyde Park Theater you will enjoy plays that you might not see on Broadway, but are no less entertaining or poignant. After all of that fun and food jog over to the Hyde Park Gym, a no nonsense locally owned business that focuses on you and your goals and helps you achieve them.

All of this can be yours, if only for a few days, because there are some really great bed and breakfasts in historic homes like The Woodburn House, The Adams House, or The Hyde Park Inn. So drop by and soak up a little bit of Austin.

Linden Leaf Studio's Guide to the Lake Travis Area

Ready to get out of the hustle and bustle of downtown Austin? A must-see on your list for SXSW is the world famous Oasis Restaurant on Lake Travis. This original restaurant is built on the side of a cliff, with numerous decks for enjoying the Texas outdoors including the beautiful view of Lake Travis - listen for the ceremonial ringing of the bell at sunset! The view of the sun setting, with a margarita in hand, is not to be missed! Want to kick up your heels? Then head to the Starlight Terrace, above the restaurant, for live music almost every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from March through October. For some unique gift shopping, check out the Oasis' antique shop called The Treasury, in addition to the Oasis gift shop.

If you're looking to relax or recover from SXSW festivities, look no further than the renowned Lake Austin Spa Resort. Situated on the shores of Lake Austin, 15 minutes from the Oasis and 35 minutes from downtown, this is one of the top spa destinations in North America. Event & Activities

Depending on the weather, March is not necessarily a bad time to get out on Lake Travis - rent a boat, fish, picnic, or parasail. My favorite time to go boating is spring or fall, when temps are mild and the lake is not so crowded. There are plenty of options for renting a boat , even if the water seems too cold for swimming. For larger groups, the party boats, from various marinas, are the way to go. End your day with appetizers and drinks and some live music at Carlos and Charlie's.

Hammer It Out's Guide to Zilker Park

In Austin, people do not often leave their own neighborhood. When you are from somewhere else it does not take you long to settle into the groove of your little slice of town. The one exception to this is the community park. Zilker Park is one of the most important pieces of Austin, without this sprawling green space I do not think we would have as large of an outdoor culture as we do. You could spend days exploring the park starting with the Zilker Botanical Gardens learning about all sorts of flora and fauna. The Garden is booked as a perfect backdrop for weddings year round. You can take a dip in Barton Springs, a natural feed public swimming pool. Then stroll on over to the Umlauf Sculpture Gardens to get inspired by an amazing collection from the works of Charles Umlauf.

Special events include the Kite Festival on March 6th that will have the sky filled with kites that you can learn to make at the park as well as the South Asian New Year's Festival April 9th. At the The 54th Annual Zilker Garden Festival March 26th-27th you can buy plants and art from local vendors, and hear talks from experienced gardeners about planting in Austin. Zilker Park is where you also will see the fireworks on the Fourth. Patrons of the Hill Side Theater are treated to Shakespeare in the Park, movies outdoors, musicals, and concerts. You can also visit Splash! to learn about the Edwards Aquifer. The park is also the home of the Zilker Tree which is lit during the holidays each year. It is built on a replica of one of 17 of Austin's remaining Moonlight Towers that provided light at night since 1895.

Now down to the important stuff food and beverage. Barton Springs Rd., leading out of Zilker Park, is stuffed to the brim with amazing local fare. You will first run into Chuy's and if you love enchiladas and Elvis, you and he will get along just fine. If you would like a place to sit, have a drink, and a chat, check out Flipnotics. If you need some Bar-B-Que, which I completly understand, The Green Mesquite will get you all fixed up. If you need Bar-B-Que and an awesome brew made on site by Brian Peters then Uncle Billy's Brew & Que will cure what ales you.

If only a burger will do, make a bee line to the Shady Grove which is also known for its live outdoor shows. When you find yourself dragging from all the great music and fun head into Romeo's Cafe for a big bowl of pasta. Austin Java has a little bit of everything to please a large group. You can end your day at the Barton Springs Saloon, a neighborhood bar with a great patio to watch the rest of the town go by.

Lustre Pearl

Why This Place is Great: You feel right at home. Really, you do! This bar is set in an old historic house. There's both indoor and outdoor seating, but I suggest sitting outside and enjoying the Texas weather. Feel free to play in the backyard. Grab a hula hoop or play some ping pong. And if you get hungry, there's a taco truck in the backyard.

Esther's Follies

Why This Place is Great: It's like Austin's version of Saturday Night Live but without the commercial breaks. In fact, this show runs at a very fast pace. So, you'll be lucky if you catch ALL the jokes. The crew is hilarious, the skits are great and the magic is entertaining.

El Chile Cafe y Cantina

Why This Place is Great: This isn't your typical Tex-Mex restaurant. There's a contemporary flare to the Tex-Mex dishes. Aside from the food, have a drink too! They are known for their margaritas.

Why This Place is Great: There's a full menu at this movie theatre, but there's also more to movies here. Check out Alamo Drafthouse's signature events like girlie night, sing-alongs and Master Pancake Theatre. Master Pancake Theatre is my favorite because comedians control the movie. They can reenact scenes or adlib lines. It's a bad movie meets good comedy kind of show.

Veggie Eats with Lynnea of Squid Ink Kollective

From finger-licking cheese-stuffed burgers, to a macrobiotic all-you-can-eat, to 100% raw foods, Austin's got something for every animal lover and picky eater. Expensiveness is rated from ~$10/person ($) to ~$25 ($$$). Note the tags such as gluten-free (GF), octo-lavo (OL), vegan (VGN), raw (RF), and places that use a lot of organic/local ingredients (OG).

So you're already downtown and looking for something to eat? Look no further than the flagship Whole Foods store (GF, OL, VGN, RF, OG, $-$$$), located at N. Lamar between 5th and 6th St. It's got something for everyone, from fresh juices and a raw food/vegan deli case to brick oven pizza slices. Try a Hail Merry Miracle Chocolate Tart (RF, OG) for the most amazing chocolate experience ever, or make your own trail mix in the bulk foods section.

For a more intimate dining experience, go to Beets Café on W. 5th St. (GF, VGN, RF, OG, $$), which has an amazing menu and is a must-stop for raw vegans. Or if you're on 6th and need something quick, Kebabalicious (OL) has two locations (M-F afternoons and Th-Sat nights) and deliciously authentic falafel pita wraps - try their spicy hummus if you enjoy the heat!

Hop across to the east side and you'll find a few other gems. First is Your Mom's Burger Bar (OL, $$) on Cesar Chavez - only place with gourmet cheese-stuffed burgers ($8-$10) where you'll find a veggie burger option! Be warned, this is a local favorite so expect it to be packed during peak hours. Farther down the road and substantially healthier is Mr. Natural (GF, OL, VGN, $-$$), a long-time provider of vegan food and healthy baked goods. The $5.75 taco salad is cheap but very filling - or snag a delicious, gluten-free chocolate muffin.

Rio's Brazilian hot pocket

Out on Pleasant Valley you'll find Rio's Brazilian (OL, $). They have a smaller menu but their breakfast pockets are the best in town and easy on YOUR pocket (guffaw!). Get some coffee while you wait! Scattered closer to I-35 are some great and cheap vegan food trailers, most notably Iggis' Texatarian, which has some great southern fare that's typically hard to find sans animal.

Head down south for some more original Austin locations. Casa de Luz (GF, VGN, OG, $$) has operated for 20 years and serves one multi-course meal every night - but it's all-you-can-eat style ($12/person). You'll find them close to Zilker Park off of S. Lamar and they post their lunch and dinner menus daily before serving - taco nights are on Thursday, and their weekend brunches are a wholesome treat.

Kerbey Lane (GF, OL, VGN, OG, $-$$) - you'll find it all over Austin, and everyone can eat here. Ask for the gluten-free menu if needed. Their location on S. Lamar is one of the better, although expect it to be packed late at night and especially weekend brunches. Nearby is Dog Almighty - the absolute best place for a vegetarian hotdog lover! Personally I don't go for their veggie chili, but I love their kraut dog with a veggie brat, or their corndogs - dipped in homemade batter! Yummy teamonade will quench your thirst.

Up north there's a few that can't be beat. Veggie Heaven (VGN, $), close to the UT campus, has for a long time been offering cheap vegan fare to hungry students. Try their infamous Protein 2000, with their unique brown rice. Also close to campus you'll find food trailer Conscious Cravings (OL, VGN, $), which serves quick and easy wraps. Farther up Guadalupe there's Thai Kitche (VGN, $), another Austin staple, with hours well into the night. For something more substantial with a peaceful setting to boot, go to Mother's on Duval St., an all-vegan restaurant with fare from enchiladas to stir-fries to BBQ tofu.

If you've got a willing driver or plenty of time to ride the bus, make the trek out past 183 for some delicious and authentic Indian places that are 100% vegetarian. Swad (OL, $) is cheap and truly authentic (spiciness included!) - it's easy to order too much so be careful!

Amazing vintage finds at Room Service

The North Loop area of Midtown is hands down one of the reasons I moved to Austin three years ago. All I have to say is this: vintage, glorious vintage. You'd be doing yourself a disservice if you did not stop into one of our famous North Loop vintage stores. Room Service has tons of kitschy, classic housewares and clothing. Across the street, Hog Wild's got mid-century furniture on lock down, and the owners/shop employees are nice as pie, always revealing the history of their hand-picked vintage items.

New to the hood is Ermine Vintage - but it's already developed a reputation as a great place to score sweet vintage duds for gals and guys alike. And by the way - it originally started as an etsy shop! How cool is that? Blackbird, also new to the neighborhood, is a cute little boutique that offers clothing and home decor.

Breakaway Records

Down the street, Blue Velvet is literally jam packed with vintage clothing and accessories. Next door to Blue Velvet is Breakaway Records - the stylish store has a pristine selection of lightly used vinyl. Fuel up with coffee from Epoch while you're in the complex. It can sometimes be crowded with college students (and all their books and computers), so take your coffee to go as you shop.

Across from this complex is the The Tigress - North Loop's first bar. The Tigress is open from 5-11 pm, so it's perfect for happy hour drinks, boasting fancy cocktails at a reasonable price. My favorite is the Moscow Mule.

Foreign & Domestic

Follow North Loop to Avenue G and you'll find Foreign & Domestic - North Loop's own fine dining spot. F&D is housed in what used to be a gas station turned (you guessed it!) vintage store. Prime seating at the bar gives you a front row view as your meal is cooked - the owners wanted to create a space that mimics the way it feels when cooking for friends. Outside of the North Loop neighborhood, but still within Midtown, I'd also recommend checking out The Peddler - a great neighborhood bike ship - and House Pizzeria, which makes lovely Neopolitan style pizza.

Pommes Frites Guide to the East Side

While not an East-Sider myself, I do spend quite a bit off time on the "other side" of the interstate. The East Side will already be teeming with SXSW events, but here are a few options for hanging out in between shows and events.

When entering the East Side, check out the light and sculpture installation under I-35. Rows of lit-up arches underneath the interstate between 6th and 8th streets are meant to represent stitches - symbolizing a re-unification of East and West sides. It also brings light to what can often be a sketchy parking lot.

As you've probably noticed by now, Austin is a sea of trailer eateries. Not to be missed is on E. 6th is East Side Drive-In, which includes favorites such as the Vegan Yacht, The Local Yolk, and the converted double decker, #19 Bus - which serves up delish cheese steaks.

Rio Rita on 6th and Attayac is famous for their Bloody Mary's, but you can also get a quick coffee there during the day. One block down (and up - 7th and Onion) is Takoba, a restaurant that infuses interior Mexican food with a swank modern decor. Takoba boasts spacious outdoor seating, including a backyard "adult sand box" - and is my pick for grabbing a delicious frozen margarita (Strawberry) and some tacos (Al Pastor).

If you're looking for a place to grab a drink and some quick food, head down to the street The Liberty (1618 E 6th), with its famous backyard trailer East Side Kings. Those beet fries are amazing. Hey, if it's good enough for Anthony Bourdain, right?

Domy Books, located at Cesar Chavez and San Marcos, is part beautifully curated specialty book shop, part gallery space - a great place to get your art fix. Stitcher extraordinaire Jenny Hart even had a show there last year.

Treasure City Thrift just re-opened in new digs at 2142 E. 7th St - and it's considered by many to be one of the best thrift stores in town.

My personal favorite restaurant on the east side, Justine's, is a quaint French brasserie located in an old house on 5th and Springdale. Justine's is always packed, and for good reason. You just can't beat the atmosphere here. I usually get the Steak Frites, and if my name is any indicator, I fancy myself a bit of a pommes frites connoisseur - Justine's will not disappoint. If you're looking to impress a date you picked up at one of those day shows, this is the place - although be prepared to drop a pretty penny. It's impossible to resist the lure of relaxing with a bottle of wine.

You've also got to check out the Wondercraft at Starving Art Studios, 2324 E. Cesar Chavez. Tons of Etsy Austin artists are represented in this mobile trailer boutique/craft space.

For you beer fanatics, Live Oak Brewing Company offers weekly brewery tours and tasting opportunities at their space on E. 5th.

Lastly, be sure to stop by El Chilito (Manor & Chicon) - because you can't leave Austin without eating some breakfast tacos - and taking a mustache ride while you're at it. The giant mustache and glasses are part of the Pay Phone Revival Project, where artists are beautifying and re-imagining old pay phones around town.

BabyBolt's Guide to South Austin

Living in South Austin for nearly ten years, we've seen a lot of change - the biggest being where we go since having a kid. Parents of young children, this guide is for you!

SOUTH LAMAR BLVD. AREA:
We used to drive way up north to the original Phil's Ice House/Amy's Ice Cream. Thankfully South Austin now has its very own location. While Phil's has amazing burgers (great veggie burgers, too!), sweet potato fries, and the best homemade buns around, the real attraction is the playground. Phil's colorful playground is fenced in, allowing parents to relax with a draft beer while their kids tear it up and make room for a post-burger dessert from Amy's. Across the street, you'll find kids' boutique GaGa. GaGa features wonderful natural parenting toys and gear from brands you trust, as well as lots of offerings from Austin designers.

Open 24 hours, Kerbey Lane Cafe is a great, kid-friendly diner. Plus, kid's eat free every Tuesday! They serve plenty of local produce and have an extensive selection of vegan/veggie options. They also cater well to those with food sensitivities. Our five-year-old loves the French Toast; we love the Migas!

Anna's Toy Depot is a great place to swing by after a brunch at Kerbey Lane. It's right next door and is filled with the best selection of used toys in town. Your kids will have fun digging through bins of PlayMobil, Lego, and random action figures and you'll get nostalgic when you come across that exact same PlaySkool farm house or record player you had when you were small!

Looking for totally low key, all Vegetarian/Vegan fare? Check out Mr. Natural. What it lacks in ambiance,it more than makes up for in tasty foods your body will thank you for.

While the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar is known for its fun pre-show entertainment, food service, beer, film fests and more, it's also known and loved for its strict throw-you-out-on-your-butt-for-talking-during-the-movie policy. However, every Tuesday, all films that begin prior to 2 pm are baby friendly. What does this mean? It means you bring your baby, you eat,
they sleep, you get a nice break, and if they cry, no one is going to make you feel bad about it. This screening is for you, not the grumpy, childless guy in the back who can come whenever he wants. See whatever you want; it's glorious!

SOUTH 1ST ST. AREA:
100% vegetarian Bouldin Creek Coffee House recently moved from an old house to a sleek, new building a block away. While the new location lacks a lot of the charm of the original, it's decidedly more child-friendly. We love the soy lattes, lemonade, eggs, and breakfast tacos.

Sugar Mama's Bakeshop has the best cupcakes in town, hands down. Do yourself a favor and go eat one. "Jack's Lemon" is divine.

Fabric and craft lovers, meet your new favorite place: Stitch Lab! Situated on S. 1st, just south of Barton Springs Rd., in a sweet converted house, sits the best local resource for sewers. Everyday something new is happening at the lab; from classes, to sales, to open troubleshooting sewing help. The shelves are teeming with gorgeous fabrics, expertly selected by the uber-talented gals of Stitch Lab. Bringing your kid while you shop? No problem; they've got you covered with coloring books and puzzles to keep the kiddo busy while you swoon over textiles.

If it's a nice day or evening, you'll definitely want to pull into the South Austin Trailer Park and Eatery - home to the trailers of Torchy's Tacos, Man Bites Dog, and Holy Cacao. You'll also find plenty of outdoor seating and a rad gameroom. Once it gets dark, the fire pit gets lit and the twinkly lights go on. Rainy day? Try the brick-and-mortar Torchy's Taco's a few miles further south on S. 1st. So good. Try the fried avocado - yum!

(SOUTH) SOUTH CONGRESS AVE.:
Further south, past the main strip of South Congress Ave., there are a few family-friendly spots worth checking out.

Austin is full of Public Parks and Playgrounds. Our personal favorite? Little Stacy Playground, it's shaded, small and just right for the under 7 crowd. It's just a bit east of South Congress, at 1400 Alameda Dr. For the killer summers, there's also a wading pool.

Ruta Maya is an Austin institution. A community-focused coffeehouse with locally-roasted, ethically farmed beans, they also host live music, workshops, and classes. Most importantly, they host the weekly Ruta Maya Kids Show every Sunday at 10:30 AM. Bring the kiddos for a rotating lineup of music, puppet shows, circus acts, and usually a little weirdness. While they watch and play, you can caffeinate.

Austin is about as cool as cities come, and not only Austinites will tell you so. South by Southwest has become a spring-time coolfest unlike any other, showcasing music, film, and interactive artists and innovators from around the world. This year, Etsy will be participating in the Interactive portion, showcasing how they've made online selling and shopping so nice. We know we like 'em!

DIY Fashion at SXSW

We are super excited to be participating in a fantastic weekend-long event hosted by Etsy on the first weekend of SXSW this March. Our team will be participating in a number of cool happenings during one of the biggest media and music events of the world. More on that later...

For now, I want to tell you about a wonderful DIY fashion show, sponsored by BurdaStyle and hosted at the Etsy venue on the Sunday night of the first weekend of SXSW. This show will feature many talented fashion and accessory designers from Austin and elsewhere around the country.

We are VERY proud that our very own Anne Marie Beard will be featured in this show!!! Her handbags and accessories are super stylish, and I can't wait to see her items up on the runway!

Mother of American Valentines

Curious about how Valentines day came about? There are a few stories about saints called Valentine that were martyred, but no one really knows for sure which one is the Valentine. They may all be. However we do know for sure who Esther Allen Howland was and how she contributed to the holiday and American crafts. Her father owned a successful stationary shop, and a business associate of his sent her a lace valentine from England when she was 19, in 1847. Being sure she could make one better she talked her father into ordering the necessary supplies. She made up a few samples for her brother to take with him on his sales route. She had hoped to get 200.00 worth of orders, but he came back with 5,000.00. Getting started right away she hired girls to help make them and soon came up with an assembly line process, long before Mr. Ford. She ran her business on her own until 1881 when she sold it to help take care of her father. So this year make a Valentine for your loved ones worthy of the memory of Ms. Howland. A crafter, entrepreneur, and the "Mother of American Valentines".
