Feature - Diamonds and Guns by Action Jackson

Name: Camille Jackson
Shop Name: Diamonds and Guns by Action Jackson
Brief Product Description: I make brightly colored Swarovski crystal jewelry that incorporates vintage findings, laser cut acrylics, and a few kitschy/kawaii pieces.

What is unique about your product? Overall, the way I combine elements. As far as I know, I'm the only jewelry creator in Austin who works extensively with Swarovski crystal flatbacks. On a bigger scale, I use a broader range of pieces (i.e. in what I have seen, most stick with only using vintage finds or only using laser cut acrylics or only using newly made bright kawaii pieces).

How did you get started? Like most other crafters/designers/artists out there, I started by making jewelry for myself and my friends!

Where do you get your inspiration? Fashion, music, art, niche aesthetics. I think it's dangerous and inhibiting for creators to limit what they derive inspiration from. I'm inspired by beautiful designs I come across in magazines, punk rock and goth music and style, 1920s-1950s fashion, old Hollywood, 20th century art, the list goes on. Colors in general are inspiring to me as well, which is part of the reason I love working with crystals—the array of colors available is more extensive than you'd think.

What excites you most about your work/shop? Finding new pieces to use is always exciting. I also love shopping, so when I order supplies, I get my kicks two-for-one style. Meeting new artists and shop owners in Austin has been a real trip, too. It's truly amazing and awe inspiring to see so many people creating so many different works in just one city.

Describe your workspace/workroom. I fantasize constantly about having a workroom devoted to making jewelry and neatly storing supplies. On Apartment Therapy, I've seen innovative ideas about using cut-out spaces as work rooms, and they're completely practical for small apartments. As is though, I currently have a rolling storage case and a dining room table that work well enough… and an understanding roommate who doesn't complain when I leave a mess on the table.

Which do you prefer: online sales/marketing or face-to-face sales/marketing? Why? Both and neither. In the 21st century, online marketing is a great way to show what you create to the world even when you're starting out. I've actually sold a few pieces to some girls in London (which is one of my favorite cities in terms of music and fashion, though I've never been), and I love that I've been able to do so with a small business. On the other hand, I love Austin, and the people who live here are wonderful. When you sell in person, people can convey their appreciation for your work, and that's one of the best intrinsic motivators to continue creating jewelry for me.

Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years?
Embarking on leaving my mark in the world. Whether it's through this or music or law/government, I can't say.

What do you feel is the most important skill you use in your business every day?
Being able to ask for help and advice from the fellow artists and crafters I know in Austin (most through EtsyAustin actually). On my own, I don't feel that I possess that much knowledge about being business savvy or creating jewelry, but I feel that the members of EA, Babes in Biz, and various other artists I've worked with at shows collectively have a wealth of knowledge that they are more than willing to share.

What do you like about EtsyAustin? The diversity of the work people create is quite remarkable. I don't know that I could dream up most of what our members make.

What do you think makes EtsyAustin Street Team unique? The collective talent and knowledge that the team possesses. We are, after all, over 100 members strong and it shows in what we've been able to do as a group in a little over a year and a half (that's how long the group has existed). The community feel that the group provides is reflective of that of the city of Austin, and it continually reminds me why I love being a part of the group and the city itself.

Describe something about yourself that may be a surprise to people on the team.
By day, I'm your typical admin secretary, but by night, I'm a jewelry creator… and a musician. I've had a musical instrument in my hands since I was ten and am grateful that I still play. Over the years, I've learned piano, flute, piccolo, bass, and now guitar. I love being able to create and play music and hope to eventually play and share that with everyone who will listen... ya know, besides my neighbors.

78704 Artisan Market - March 6th

The EtsyAustin Team has designated the 3rd Saturday of every month to participate en masse at the 78704 Artisan Market on South Congress. Many teammates have been testing this spot out for a couple of weeks, including this coming Saturday, and we're really excited to have a regular group event to show off our artists and crafters. The first big showing of 20+ artists will be March 20th, so check back for posts about it!

It's called the 78704 Artisan Market and it happens every Saturday from 11am to 6pm on the west side of South Congress at Gibson. It is outdoors in the LAZ Parking Lot next to the always awesome Hotel San José and in the heart of what's happening. It's free to attend, and while parking can be tricky, it will totally be worth it.

EtsyAustin Team members who are vending this Saturday, March 6th, are...

Pauline with Coral Reef Dreams

Jasmine with The Jasmine Gallery

Kelly with GemJunkie

Merritt with Merritt Gade Fine Handmades

Megan with DemiDuval won't be vending, but she will be there taking photos for the blog.

Etsy Austin Valentine's Day Finds

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, chocolates are disappearing from the shelves, florists are overbooking deliveries, and restaurants are running out of reservation slots (ask me how I know). Whether you're staying in or going out, Etsy Austinites have just the right handmade goodness to help you celebrate V-Day (and maybe even gift a little something to yourself). Check out these great finds from our team!

First up, we have Lovebirds earrings from Tracy Owens Chasteen of Polished Two. To me, these are the perfect gift for your bff or even to yourself- won't break the bank and it's the classy non-cheesy/non-romantic version of Valentine's. To me, they're part rockabilly part Americana classic tattoo art, which y'all know I'm a huge fan of. And, Like Tracy points out, if you want to ease up on the Valentine's aspect for year-round wear, you can take the heart off and sport the sparrows solo.

Next, we have a rockin Valentine's Day card from Tisa Jackson of Tisa's Creations. The best part about these clever and affordable cards? You can custom order what the front says. My initial reaction to this card was a chuckle soon followed by an "awww". I myself am probably guilty of talking about how much I love my effects pedals, chai, or making jewelry more than expressing the degree to which I care for the people close to me. So, if you're like me, this card is the perfect way to simply and stylishly let everyone know just how much you love them.

Kristen Pumphrey of Pommes Frites is gearing up for Happy Hearts Day with this cute and clever Valentine's Day book safe. Perfect for any beloved neurotic in your life, this salvaged book could be a two-for and double as a gift box and later serve its intended safekeeping purpose. So, if you have someone near and dear who's working to beef up their impressive all mahogany two story library- and simultaneously home security, send 'em over to Pommes Frites.

Yours truly is especially delighted to know that there are a few Etsy Austinites keeping this Valentine's Day sparkly. One staying true to this is April Wright of April Wright Design. Featured are her Pink Glitterheart Earrings, which she also sells in amber! The black settings look like they are custom laser cut acrylic, which I love, but April actually does the shaping and cutting herself with shrinky dink plastic. For those of you who aren't quite the mag pie I am, April's Scarlett Deco Earrings are just as cute and just as fitting for Valentine's Day.

Finally we have a customized valentine courtesy of Beth Albrecht of Paired Hearts. In her shop, she has a sweet "Even My Hands Love You" valentine as well as an anti Valentine's "This is Not a Valentine" valentine, which could be perfect if you're Anti V-Day or if you find yourself in a Lisa Simpson-esque predicament where giving someone a valentine makes them think you're up and ready for dating/marriage/whatever fits the scenario. However, my favorite is the custom greeting card listing (one of the samples shown). This particular punny owl valentine is perfect for any owl aficionado, the trendster who knows owls are all the rage right now, or anyone close to you who can't be told enough times how much you care about them. Aww.

That's all for now! Visit my blog to see more about these lovely ladies' fabulous lines, Valentine's freebies, and what's going on in Austin for Happy Hearts Day.

Action Jackson out.

Feature - Robo Roku

Shop Name: Robo Roku
Name: Renée Rice & Josh DuBose are the team behind Robo Roku, (Renée is answering the questions.)

Brief Product Description: Character driven line of assorted accessories, fun jewelry & stationery.

What is unique about your product? The characters are done in tandem with my Robo Roku partner Josh.

How did you get started? I would make things for people & always dream up cartoony characters. However, I couldn't draw in a cartoonish way, I could only draw realistic. I partnered with my husband who draws comics to turn my sketches into cartoons.

Where do you get your inspiration? I have incredibly vivid dreams, most designs start there. I also have a "popcorn" ceiling, and stare at it when I go to sleep & wake up & connect the dots to make characters. Kinda like what people do with clouds.

What excites you most about your work/shop? Since the designs are done in tandem sometimes the end design is not what was planned at all and it becomes a favorite. That is the most exciting part, surprising ourselves with the evolution of a design.

Describe your workspace/workroom. We turned our master bedroom into our workspace so we can use the master bath for cleaning screens when we silk screen. Josh's desk is set up across the room from me so that I can see his computer when he is working on the characters. It allows me to keep working on my computer & glance over to say what changes need to be made. We are going to be house hunting in April, so we will be looking for the oh so rare house with two master bedrooms. I really like working from home. If I am in a fussy mood I can work in my pajamas all day.

Which do you prefer: online sales/marketing or face-to-face sales/marketing? Why? I am a little torn on this one. My first reaction is online, because Josh & I are both a little shy. However, meeting people & seeing them smile over what we worked hard on is a really nice reward.

Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years? This one is tough. I want our business to grow of course, but where I'd like to see myself in 5 years is a little dependent on a new local co-op I joined. Their vision & mine are pretty inline with each other, so if it succeeds I won't have to take that venture on, on my own. Sorry that wasn't a solid answer. I'm trying not to jinx myself. Josh partnered with a friend of ours doing the illustration for his graphic novel, so he is hoping to continue doing that more.

What do you feel is the most important skill you use in your business every day? Connecting with people. When I meet new people and they get to know what we're about, we gain new supporters.

What do you like about EtsyAustin? Since joining I have met some really fantastic people & even have some collaborations coming out of it.

What do you think makes EtsyAustin Street Team unique? It's a really supportive & proactive group. I really like being around productive people, it only adds fuel to my fire. There are so many opportunities in Austin for local designers, having a team of people to seek them out really helps.

Describe something about yourself that may be a surprise to people on the team.

My music taste is a bit of an anomaly. I own well over 3,000 cds, and the artists range from Reba McEntire to Hatebreed to Miley Cyrus to Modest Mouse to Taylor Swift to George Jones to Rage Against the Machine to Death Cab for Cutie to Celine Dion to Andrew Lloyd Webber compilations, and I truly enjoy all of those artists. I have been in love with music since the age of 4. Michael Jackson was my first friend. When other kids would tote their dolls around I would carry my Thriller album.
