Curious

I am seriously asking this question - no sarcasm, no search for advice, no agenda, no nothing: what is with the proliferation of mustache-related items for sale on Etsy? I've asked around and am always greeted with 'what?' Please, if you could tell me what is going on, I would really like to know. I understand, somewhat, the appleal of muted pictures and tiny pots of moss, but, mustaches on a stick? Mustaches on a scarf? Mustache coat hangers? Huh? My next post will be informational and fun - not RubyPearl fun probably, but I think y'all will enjoy. Best to everyone and any insight about mustache popularity would be appreciated. Take it easy.

  1. ha! funny, Holly. I have no idea what is with the crafty mustache fascination. and a couple of years ago it was a tooth fascination, which left me just as perplexed!

  2. Someone said cupcakes were a fascination too... hey, Etsy Austin, let's all band together and for fun pick something random and all turn into a rage! How about pickles? Or Zebras? Or banjos... or what do you suggest! Might be a fun group social experiment in manipulating the masses. Anyone in?

  3. well, thanks for the insight or, rather, mutual confusion over the mondo mass of mustachery on Etsy! Teeth and cupcakes, huh? Wow, I havent been on Etsy long enough to see the trends come and go... i really like the idea of picking something random for experimental purposes - pickles are a great suggestion... what about lips, as in 70s lips, remember that? i have some vintage 70s lips charms that i would like to move and i don't see them going anywhere in the mustache marketplace. ;-)

  6. I think Etsy is trying to start a trend. Maybe? I vote for zebras.

  7. Well, in the kids market, cupcakes and zebras are very popular. It's probably a chicken/egg thing but Gymbo has had quite a few cupcake and zebra themed lines for the last couple of years.

I vote for pickles!! That would be pretty funny.

  9. what was up with the skull & crossbones thing that was everywhere a couple of years back? i think the mustache is just another of those weird zeitgeist things. strange things like this just catch on, have a limited life and then fade away again. i like the mustache thing. i mean, it's even just a great word. mustached pickles would be cute. like a Dali stache on a baby dill.

i like the idea of starting our own trend. seems like something that a UT grad student could make into some sort of sociological study. my theme suggestions would be retro rocket ships or zeppelins. pickle zeppelins?

  10. Holly, you're asking the wrong. The real question is why wouldn't someone want a mustache related product?

  11. Ooh, pickles. I love pickles. That would probably be why I named my newest dog Miss Pickles. Mustaches are fun and depending on the style, say a lot about a person. I agree with Dave on that one.

  12. I may just have to sculpt a mustached pickle now. I don't know why the mustaches are popular, but it really doesn't matter. This is one of these "go with the flow" things.

    Pickles have my vote!

  13. I am really curious too! I can't figure out what is going on with all the mustaches either. I did an internet search and didn't find anything (but it led me here:) So nobody knows huh? Crazy....Maybe one day it will all make sense.
